Maintaining a pool is more than just throwing in some chemicals. Clean and safe swimming pool water is clear because of how the process in circulation combined with filtration works. Water circulation is not only reliable but also safe, it consists of the basic pump and filter in your pool.
Pump
The Pump takes water from the pool, passes it through a filter to remove particles like dirt, and finally sends back the clean filtered water into the pool. Types of Pool Filters

Sand Filters
These filters work by backwashing, which involves reversing the flow of water. Sand filters operate best when they are slightly dirty so only backwash if you see an increase in pressure of 7-10 lbs over normal operating pressure on your pressure gauge. It is suggested to clean sand filters at least once a season using a maintenance kit like Regal® Filter Renew.
Cartridge Filters
As soon as the pressure gauge shows a 7-10 lbs increase, it is time to clean the cartridge filter. Take out the cartridge(s), rinse away any loose dirt or debris, and soak them in Regal® Filter Renew for 12 hours. After this, give them a good rinse to remove any remaining residue then dry them well before reinstalling for optimal efficiency.
Buying an extra set of cartridge elements will allow you to regularly change out the first set, preventing any “downtime” for the filtration or circulation systems. If you are unable to perform, many local pool maintenance companies offer this service.
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filters
Similar to cartilage filters DE filters can be cleaned through backwashing when pressure increases to 7-10 lbs, but after back washing new DE must be added each time so that it can coat the filter grids, by pouring through the skimmer thus ensuring easy and quick distribution.
